[About]
‘Phrase Series’ consists of three phrases either I have come across or have heard of in relation to the treatment of service members. In particular, I tried to contextualize certain symbols or words so that they would stand out in regards to honoring and dishonoring veterans and those still in service; such as the text, background, and color. In addition, I considered the inclusion of the small objects outside the phrases themselves. In order:
‘Either.’
In recognition of MIA’s and POW’s.
Yellow Ribbons are tied around a tree as a nod to those absent or missing in light of serving. They are traditionally given to loved ones.
Small Object: Yellow Ribbon with written Scripture.
‘Record.’
My family and I experienced this ourselves at my grandfather’s funeral. (I didn’t notice until my mom pointed it out).
A military member holds a trumpet and looks to be playing, but the “trumpet” houses a record of the song Taps.
Small Object: Cassette Tape as a stand in for a recording.
‘Folded.’
It’s one thing to read about a veteran in a newspaper (if that), and another to give them due service. For military funerals a flag is typically folded into a triangle, then given to a family member in recognition of their loved one.
Small Object: Folded (painted in light of flag) newspaper in about the same manner as a folded flag (newspaper too short).
