Gourds was rendered in a new medium to the artist at the time. A sophomore in her college career, Tiffany was challenged to use only the four colors provided to her in conte crayon form. Besides needing to mix and blend significantly to reach any resemblance of the subject matter, an additional challenge was given to incorporate the surface (paper) in the piece besides the negative space. Notice the vertical, semi-yellow stripes in the cloth.
